About The Training

What is the MCA STCW Qualification

The International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW), 1978 sets minimum qualification standards for masters, officers and watch personnel on seagoing merchant ships and large yachts.

The prerequisite for working on any maritime vessel over 24 meters begins with the STCW 2010 Course, consisting of 5 separate modules. As our network of industry partner superyachts and recruitment agencies consist exclusively of vessels over 24 metres, it is mandatory to first have this qualification before application for your first job onboard.

For those not holding an STCW 2010 certificate already, we offer the highest caliber of STCW 2010 training courses available in the world, conducted using state-of-the-art facilities and equipment all accredited by the British Government Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA). The MCA STCW is widely considered the gold standard of STCW certifications available and recognized in 174 International Maritime Organization (IMO) states. It includes the following modules:

Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting (FPFF)

This module deals with the necessary precautions to minimize the risk of fires aboard ship. It examines how fires are caused and the proper means of extinguishing them. The course includes practical training in the use of fire-fighting equipment and the use of self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) for fire fighting and rescue. The practical live fire fighting training takes place in the Galileo fire training facility and in our IMO/MNTB model fire ship.

Elementary First Aid (EFA)

This module is a mixture of theory and practical sessions offering essential knowledge on how to provide immediate basic medical care at the scene of an accident or other medical emergency.

Personal Safety and Social Responsibility (PSSR)

This classroom based module provides basic induction training in safety procedures and accident prevention, and to familiarize novice crew with the employment conditions and working environment onboard.

Personal Survival Techniques (PST)

This module provides knowledge of essential prevention and survival techniques, including theory and practice sessions, investigating causes of distress, knowledge and use of equipment, launch and recovery of life rafts, preparation for survival, personal survival skills and use of search and rescue organisations. Exercises are carefully supervised and can be undertaken by non-swimmers.

Proficiency in Security Awareness (PSA)

This module is for crew who do not have designated security duties, but must still be aware of key security issues, such as : threats to the maritime transport industry, maritime security definitions, security roles and responsibilities, company and ship security requirements, security threat levels and security measures and procedure.
